When you hear the word "SDPA," what comes to mind? For many of us, it’s our incredible conferences, where we gather twice a year to share educational content, connect with peers, and have a blast doing it. That’s certainly one of the SDPA’s highlights—but the organization is so much more than that.

SDPA is your membership society. It’s your professional home. It’s where like-minded Derm PAs come together to support each other, learn and grow, inspire and challenge one another, and build lasting professional relationships with colleagues from across the country.

I’m incredibly honored to be stepping into the role of your president this July. Somehow, I’ve found myself following in the footsteps of Amber Blair, whose list of achievements truly raised the bar during her tenure. Admittedly, unlike many of our past presidents, I’m not someone who gravitates toward self-help or leadership books (though I do love reading—seriously, if you ever want to talk books, pull me aside!). My approach to leadership has always been observational. I love watching how different individuals lead—what works, what doesn’t—and learning through real-world experiences. I’m more of a visual, hands-on learner, and I know many of you are too. That’s why SDPA’s expansive educational offerings are so valuable.

From our newly updated Diplomate Program, now on an interactive learning platform, to the Learning Center packed with past CME and non-CME lectures, articles, podcasts, and more—the amount of content available to members is truly impressive. And the best part? Most of it is completely free to you as a member. Whether you’re attending conferences or learning at your own pace, SDPA meets you where you are. And if you haven’t been to a conference lately, you’re missing out on something truly special.

As president, one of my key goals is to help every Derm PA realize the full value of SDPA membership. Beyond conferences, we offer a merchandise store so you can wear your Derm PA pride loud and proud. We’re also revamping our member discounts to add even more value. The Diplomate Program is now in its second version adapted to reflect Bolognia’s Dermatology Essentials 2nd edition, and features a fully interactive learning platform. The emerging scholars program helps new to dermatology PAs get mentorship, a robust knowledge of a disease state and camaraderie.  

As we step into this next chapter together, I hope you’ll feel empowered to take full advantage of everything SDPA has to offer—and inspired to contribute in new ways. Dear Members,

Hello, friends and colleagues. As we welcome the warmth of June, taking us closer to the new 2025-2026 SDPA leadership cycle (beginning July 1st), I find myself reflecting on an incredible journey over this past year. Serving as your President has been an extraordinary honor, and it is with a mix of pride and nostalgia that I write this final newsletter. This marks the end of a chapter for me, both personally and professionally, as the SDPA has become more like family than work…it has become my professional “home.” I have witnessed an incredible amount of growth and evolution over this past year, and I am so proud to have had the opportunity to play a small role in guiding this movement. From the promising new initiatives to the shift in our marketing messaging, to the focus on advocacy efforts and the considerable growth of our membership, I am confident that the SDPA is truly poised for greatness and long-term success. Given this runway, surrounded by an incredible board of directors, group of volunteers, and a stellar staff - the sky is the limit!

Over the past year, our organization has made remarkable strides. We have learned to be agile and adapt. We have faced challenges, learned from them, risen to the occasion, made hard decisions and embraced change. In working to improve our acumen in board function, a few members of our executive board were able to join our CEO at an American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) meeting that focused on exceptional boards creating alignment between board members and the CEO to work together in a collaborative, shared governance best practice model. This proved to be an incredibly beneficial tool, and I look forward to additional opportunities.

We have also successfully launched new initiatives and sought new opportunities that have strengthened our community of DermPAs. From our inaugural Itch Conference, which set a new standard for targeted learning, to the unveiling of our modernized brand identify and logo, the development of a new robust website, and the impending launch of the “Diplomate, Legacy of Excellence” training program, we continually seek to enhance member engagement. Additionally, the move to our new home office space, just blocks from Capitol Hill, further demonstrates an intentional commitment to supporting PA practice and patient care, bolstering our advocacy efforts in ways we could not have imagined!

This takes me to the next exciting topic…SDPA summer conference! The vibrant energy flowing around this event, which is right around the corner, is palpable. Taking place June 25 -June 29 at the Marriot Marquis in Washington DC, I must admit I cannot wait to welcome you there. In full transparency, the FOMO is real - you don’t want to miss this event! Kicking it off at our preconference day with SDPA’s first organized "Hill Day" in over a decade If you have never had the opportunity to spend a “day on the hill”, don’t worry, we do all the hard work for you, providing detailed guidance to set you up for success. This is just another testament to our commitment to representing all DermPAs at the highest level. I urge you to consider participating. I have done so a handful of times, and it is an amazing opportunity to be a part of the solution. This is being held simultaneously as our newest, exclusive class of emerging scholars are working hard to get up to speed on all things psoriasis. Our four conference days will be filled with excellent and diverse educational content, receptions, and unique opportunities that will appeal to PAs, NPs, students and other medical professionals with all levels of

experience and exposure. Our welcome event never disappoints and will be themed true to the DC culture and the VIP event pays homage to one of the most scandalous moments in the history of our government taking place at the Watergate Hotel.

Our staff is working tirelessly to ensure that everything summer conference related is perfect by the time we get kick off, and the numbers of registrants far exceeds my expectations already! Additionally, as I know there may be members in the local area that were unable to take weekdays off work- we made the decision to open a late, day-pass option over the weekend, so that you can participate in a portion of the conference. As irony sometimes has it, we end the conference with a bang on June 29th, which also happens to be my birthday, and I look forward to celebrating with each of you!

My path here within the organization has been an extensive and fulfilling experience. By the end of my term, I will have dedicated 10 years to volunteering with the SDPA. That’s nearly a quarter of my life! I had the opportunity to participate initially as the host of Dermcast in addition to being a member of the Publications and Communications Committee, prior to being appointed as the committee chair. I then transitioned onto the SDPA board of directors, as Director as Large for multiple years, prior to serving as Secretary/Treasurer, and ultimately entering this 3-year term as your president. As I am finishing my second year in this role and ready to transition into the immediate-past-president seat and my final year on the board, I am thankful to have one last touchpoint with you all. Thank you to my incredible group of volunteers and board of directors. Your passion and dedication are the lifeblood of our progressional organization. I also want to thank our CEO & Executive Director, Krista Bower, and her amazing staff. I am immensely grateful to all of you for your support, collaboration, and the friendships forged along the way.

As the SDPA moves forward, I leave you in capable hands, with confidence in our shared vision and a bright path ahead. Thank you for this unforgettable experience. As I step down, I am excited for the future of the SDPA. Our succession looks strong with Incoming President Kristin Rygg, followed by President-Elect Andrew Baker. The future is bright!

Our dedicated board, exceptional volunteers and staff are poised to continue this momentum. The groundwork we've laid in advocacy, education, and community building will keep us advancing and innovating. Our leadership pipeline is pivotal to continuing this initiative. I encourage each of you to stay involved, share your voice, and help shape the future of our society and the DermPA landscape. As the warmth of May surrounds us, I hope you're relishing the vibrant colors and renewal that spring brings. This time of year is always exciting, with early blossoms swiftly transitioning to lush growth as we approach summer. Personally, this season feels even more impactful as my son turns 18 and prepares to graduate from high school next month. Exciting Office Relocation:

I’m thrilled to announce that the SDPA has moved its home office to 400 Virginia Avenue, just blocks from Capitol Hill. This strategic move enhances our advocacy efforts while providing better amenities at essentially the same cost. We look forward to welcoming you during our summer conference, as "Hill Day" will take place at our new location.

Summer Conference Adventures:

Let’s talk summer conference! I am so excited to see you all in DC and experience an incredible robust educational agenda with amazing events and unique opportunities in our nation’s capital. We are kicking it off with “Hill Day”, which is a tremendous opportunity to raise awareness of the PA profession and to advocate on important topics that affect our practice. Don’t worry if you have never been to the hill or don’t know what to expect- we will help you! Begin by checking out the recorded hill day webinar, that you can access on our website, which gives additional guidance and information. The SDPA will set you up for a successful trip to the hill- just bring comfortable shoes! Simultaneously we are hosting the 3^rd class of emerging scholars, sponsored by J&J, for the pre-conference learning track. Congratulations to all of our incoming scholarship recipients! We have incorporated additional track learning and more advanced concepts in our educational programming- so expect to find what you need no matter how long you have been practicing!  Additionally, we have an incredibly fun themed, interactive welcome event for everyone to enjoy- more to come soon! Also, for my VIPs and Diplomates- we will have the opportunity to engage in a “scandalous” night with a beautiful view at the infamous Watergate Hotel!

As we enter the second quarter of the year, I am excited to share the progress the SDPA has made in just a few months into our 2025 strategic initiatives. From a successful new conference to a refreshed logo and a complete website redesign, our dedicated staff and volunteers are working tirelessly for our members. Additionally, we’ve concluded our annual elections, welcoming a new group of volunteers to the board. Much like the fresh growth of spring, the SDPA is on an exciting path of renewal.

Let's Talk Itch!

This March, the SDPA hosted its first-ever regional, topic-specific conference in my hometown, and I am proud to say it was a resounding success! With nearly 150 participants registered and generous support from our pharmaceutical partners, we provided a robust educational program in an area of significant need. The event kicked off with a fun NASCAR-themed welcome, even featuring motorized racecars! The full day of engaging lectures offered a total of 6 CME credits, and the feedback was phenomenal. Thank you to everyone who attended—it was wonderful to see so many smiling faces!

As many of you know, last year marked the 30th anniversary of the SDPA, which allowed us to turn our focus to the future. We polled our members and held focus groups to ask, “What can the SDPA do for you?” Your feedback was invaluable, and we set out to create an actionable plan. We committed to investing in a complete website redesign, ensuring that it is visually appealing, engaging, and user-friendly for easy access to information. After reaching out to multiple companies, we found an organization that aligns with our needs, and a task force of Derm PAs has guided the process each step of the way. We are nearly ready to launch—stay tuned for more information!

We also recognized that it would be a perfect time to incorporate a modernized logo to drive us into the next 30 years. The board undertook a thorough design process to create a logo that represents our membership and can be effectively digitized for various platforms. Don’t worry; our historic logo will still be honored and used! You may see the new logo start to appear soon—be on the lookout, and I hope you love it as much as I do!

As we enter the second quarter, our advocacy team has been diligently working. Our Legislative Affairs Committee, led by Deborah Horwitz, PA-C, along with Killian Lozach, our Director of Advocacy and Membership, is ensuring that our voice is heard on Capitol Hill. I invite you to join us for the "Step Up for Skin Health Capitol Hill Fly-In" on June 25th, coinciding with our Summer Conference in Washington, DC. This is a phenomenal opportunity to advocate for issues affecting dermatology practices and patient care directly with policymakers. To prepare, join us for the “Step Up for Skin Health Hill Day Webinar – Know Before You Go!” This virtual presentation will be held on April 30th at 8:00 PM ET and will cover everything from our legislative priorities to what to expect during meetings with legislators.

Our committee has curated a robust 2025 advocacy agenda focusing on critical issues for DermPAs. You may have noticed an increase in emails from the SDPA regarding specific advocacy issues and calls for action. Thanks to your engagement, the SDPA has sent 1,601 letters to federal legislators and 858 letters to state legislators, totaling 2,459 letters in Q1! This is huge! Congratulations to our volunteers and staff for making this happen, and a heartfelt thank you to all our members for getting involved!

As we embrace the new season, let us carry forward the momentum generated by our recent successes and initiatives. Your continued engagement and support are vital to our mission, and together, we can make a tremendous impact in the dermatology community and improve the PA practice landscape. Society of Dermatology Physician Associates Brings Leading Experts to Charlotte for Groundbreaking Insights at the Itch Conference

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia–March 21, 2025—The Society of Dermatology Physician Associates (SDPA) will host its inaugural “Itch Conference” on March 27-28, 2025, bringing together some of the brightest minds in dermatology to Charlotte, North Carolina, for powerful discussions and industry-shaping insights. This premier event, designed for healthcare professionals, researchers, and thought leaders, will cover the latest advancements in dermatological care with a focus on understanding and treating itch-related conditions, such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, prurigo nodularis, and chronic spontaneous urticaria. Sessions will cover the topic of itch from head to toe, starting with the basics--definitions, pathophysiology, and patient assessment—moving to more complex clinical cases like chronic pruritus (itch) of unknown origin.

SDPA is pleased to welcome Gil Yosipovitch, MD, Professor of Dermatology at the Miller School of Medicine at University of Miami, and Director of the Miami Itch Center, as Conference Medical Director. Dr. Yosipovitch, known as “The Godfather of Itch,” is an internationally recognized leader whose research has significantly advanced the understanding of itch mechanisms and treatment strategies. His sessions promise to provide groundbreaking insights that will benefit both seasoned practitioners and those new to the field of dermatology.

As the holidays fade in the rear-view mirror and we are well into the new year, the SDPA leaders and staff are refreshed, energized, and hard at work! So much has happened since I sent out the last newsletter, and I am thrilled to fill you all in on the “latest and greatest” from behind the scenes at SDPA. While Punxsutawney Phil predicts six more weeks of winter, spring feels like it is just around the corner (at least it does here in the southeast!), and along with that comes many exciting new initiatives for all SDPA members! With Valentines Day upon us (Happy V-Day to all of those who celebrate), it is my pleasure to share with you all the things that are going on in the SDPA that I LOVE!

You may recall that last year, our board of directors crafted a new vision, mission, and three-year strategic plan to serve as our guiding roadmap. Just seven months in, we are actively executing the initial phase, showcasing our commitment to you and the DermPa community.

LET’s TALK ABOUT the Inaugural Itch Conference!

The anticipation is building for SDPA's first-ever regional event—the Itch Conference—taking place March 27-28 in Charlotte, NC. With the "Godfather of Itch" as Medical Director and nationally known faculty experts, this is a can't-miss event. Plus, you'll earn six Category One CME credits alongside invaluable clinical insights. We're "itching" to see you there!

SHOUT OUT to our new Staff Members!

In reviewing our staffing needs within our organization, we identified opportunities to add new positions in order to better serve you. We're thrilled to welcome Killian Lozach as our new Director of Advocacy and Membership, focusing solely on legislative impacts for DermPA practice. Additionally, we've welcomed Jordan Snelson as Vice President of Public Relations and Marketing and promoted Jennifer Bethke (our most tenured staffer) to Vice President of Education & Meetings. We have also added Jill Franklin, Education and Meeting Manager in addition to Allison Pelsoci, Education Coordinator. These improvements serve as just another example of how your membership dollars are reinvested and working for you! I am confident that this expansion will directly positively impact the SDPA's ability to serve our membership through education and advocacy for the DermPA profession!

DRUMROLL PLEASE…Website Redesign!

We asked, you shared, and we listened! Last year the SDPA hosted multiple advisory boards for our members so that we could gain insight on the specific needs and wants of our DermPAs in the community. As a membership organization, the SDPA exists to support our members through-out their entire career and we wanted to ensure that we are on track to do just that. One of the items we heard multiple times is that, despite the great content we offer, the design of our website was not as user friendly as it should be. We took that information back to the table and set out to fix the problem. Through a diligent process of

investigation, we worked to find the right company to guide us through a complete website redesign. The company we chose took a thoughtful approach to truly understanding our profession and our members, to curate a product that is uniquely individualized to our needs. A task force was then created to guide and consult with them throughout the process. We are now well into this project, and you will see this launch in a few months. We are extremely excited about what we have seen so far, and cannot wait to share this will all of you! Stay tuned!

I am thrilled to have the opportunity to share just a snapshot of what is going on behind the scenes at the SDPA and how we are all working collectively for you! The SDPA is here to support DermPAs, so that they can work collaboratively as an integral part of the healthcare team. As we slowed down over the holidays, I trust you found time to relax, regroup, and reflect on the past year. Now, stepping into January 2025, I extend my warmest wishes for a prosperous and fulfilling year ahead. This is an exciting time for new beginnings, fresh goals, and renewed commitment to our vital work as Dermatology Physician Associates.

Jennifer Bethke Elevated to Vice President of Education and Events

SDPA is equally excited to announce Jennifer Bethke as Vice President of Education and Events. Bethke, who has been with SDPA since 2022 and previously served as Senior Director of Education & Meetings, has been instrumental in designing and executing premier educational programs for our members, such as the Emerging DermPA Scholars program and multiple well-received pre-conference workshops, including a cosmetics cadaver lab. She will continue to expand SDPA’s commitment to providing innovative, high-quality educational offerings.

As part of this strategic growth effort, Jordan Snelson, Vice President of Public Relations and Marketing, will drive SDPA’s marketing, communications, and branding initiatives. Snelson strives to position SDPA as a thought leader in dermatology for physician associates, ensuring its programs and resources reach and resonate with the Society’s members and the broader healthcare community. Jordan joined the SDPA team in September 2024, bringing a strong proficiency in federal government service and strategic marketing and communications.

Society of Dermatology Physician Associates Urges Action to Support Step-Therapy Reform Bill S.1267-A in New York

ALEXANDRIA, VA, December 17, 2024—The Society of Dermatology Physician Associates (SDPA) is calling on all dermatology PAs and PAs to join us in an urgent effort to improve patient care in New York. The state legislature has passed the step-therapy reform bill S.1267-A, which now awaits Governor Kathy Hochul’s signature before the December 24th deadline.

S.1267-A addresses the harmful effects of “fail-first” step-therapy policies that require patients to try alternative treatments before insurers approve access to the originally prescribed medications. These policies often lead to treatment abandonment, causing significant harm to patients' physical and mental well-being.

Under S.1267-A, insurers would be required to implement protocols that accept attestations submitted by the patient’s healthcare professional regarding any previously failed treatments. This reform is a critical step in protecting patients' access to timely and appropriate care.

“Step-therapy policies delay effective treatment, putting unnecessary barriers between patients and the care they need,” said Krista Bower, SDPA CEO and Executive Director. “By signing S.1267-A into law, Governor Hochul has the opportunity to prioritize patients’ health and empower medical professionals to make the best treatment decisions.”

SDPA urges all supporters and advocates to take action by sending a letter to Governor Hochul, encouraging her to sign S.1267-A into law.

Las Vegas, NV, November 14-17, 2024 — The Society of Dermatology Physician Associates (SDPA) is set to host its 22nd Annual Fall Conference in Las Vegas, while celebrating its 30th year, welcoming dermatology professionals from around the country for an immersive, four-day event focused on advancing knowledge in dermatology and supporting excellence in patient care. This year’s conference emphasizes skin health awareness, offering free skin checks to the public and educational opportunities for Physician Associates (PAs) in dermatology.

Event Highlights:

Free Skin Checks on The Sun Bus 
Open to the public on Thursday, November 14, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., The Sun Bus, a mobile skin cancer awareness and prevention unit, will provide complimentary skin checks and educational resources. The Sun Bus will be parked outside the conference host hotel Fontainebleau Las Vegas | Luxury Resort Hotel, on Elvis Presley Boulevard. This initiative aims to increase awareness of sun safety and empower individuals to detect early signs of skin cancer. This event is presented by the Dermatology Physician Associates Foundation (DPAF), the philanthropic arm of the SDPA, with sponsorship support from SciBase. 

Specialized Training for Dermatology Professionals
Attendees will have the chance to participate in a pre-conference hands-on workshop, Suturing Techniques for Derm PAs™, led by Douglas DiRuggiero, DMSc, MHS, PA-C, on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This hands-on session provides PAs with practical skills in advanced suturing, critical for dermatology professionals.

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia October 7, 2024 - The Society of Dermatology Physician Associates (SDPA) proudly celebrates National Physician Associate (PA) Week from October 6-12, 2024, recognizing the indispensable contributions of PAs in delivering high-quality healthcare, particularly in dermatology. This week serves as a special opportunity to highlight the critical role DermPAs™ play in patient care, from diagnosing and treating skin conditions to educating patients on preventative care and skincare routines.

Reflecting on Growth and Looking Forward to the Future

And just like that, it’s September 1st! It's truly remarkable how quickly we’ve arrived at this point in the year. The phrase “time flies” resonates deeply with me as I reflect on how swiftly the months have passed. I’m beginning to sense the first whispers of fall, with the top leaves of my maple tree gently shifting in color and the cooler evening temperatures settling in (at least here in North Carolina).

The recent holiday weekend not only marked the end of a wonderful summer but also kicked off football season, hinting at the delightful changes to come. Fall is, without a doubt, my favorite time of year! I cherish watching the foliage transform, reveling in the crisp air, enjoying a hearty pot of chili while cheering for my favorite team on Saturday afternoons (we’re a house divided—“Go Blue” and “Go Gators”), and cozying up by a warm fire in the evenings. It’s heartwarming to see schools back in session, bringing a sense of routine to many households.

This year is particularly significant for my family, as my son embarks on his senior year of high school! Time truly does fly; it feels like just yesterday he was starting kindergarten.  This transition prompts me to reflect on our journey—both personally and professionally—as I consider where we are, where we have been, and what lies ahead. I’m reminded of the evolution of the PA profession. When I began my career in dermatology over a decade ago, a significant portion of my day was spent educating others about what a PA does and our qualifications. Thankfully, that conversation has become increasingly rare, and I credit this shift to the dedicated, seasoned dermatology PAs that have paved the path (thank you; your hard work is greatly appreciated!) and the SDPA, which has steadfastly advocated for our profession for the past 30 years. 

Now, as our membership numbers near 5,000, it is no secret or surprise that the SDPA is the premiere organization that supports and advocates for DermPAs™ from the moment they consider a career in dermatology until the time that they retire.
 
As we continue to celebrate our 30th anniversary, I find myself increasingly excited about our progress. Understanding the incredible growth we've achieved over the last decade fuels my enthusiasm for what we can accomplish in the next ten years! Reflecting on the short time I have to serve you as president of the SDPA, I am committed to making every moment count. I have fully immersed myself in our strategic plan, aligning my efforts with our vision and considering the impactful outcomes we can achieve for our members. The SDPA team and I launched this process at our annual leadership summit in July, where we focused on cultivating our organizational culture, developing our leadership skills, and planning for the future. During this three-day event, we dedicated countless hours to laying a strong foundation that will set our association on a successful trajectory.

I believe that organizational culture is integral to our success, and I intend to focus much of my efforts in this area. If we curate a thoughtful plan, design an effective roadmap, assemble the best team, and set our course in the right direction, the sky is the limit! Our initiatives are now taking shape, supported by a clear execution strategy designed to deliver real, tangible benefits to our membership and the PA profession. Our strategic plan serves as our roadmap for the next three years and is both comprehensive and robust. Now as we move forward from this foundational infrastructure, we can begin to see the vision translate into our upcoming programing.  We are currently in the thick of planning our fall conference in November and it is going to be EPIC!  Our CME team has been hard at work curating an incredible educational experience with a robust agenda, top-notch speakers, exciting events and uniquely engaging opportunities that will make you feel like it is great to come “home” to the SDPA conference.  This is truly an exciting time for the SDPA membership and I can’t wait to see you all there!
 
As I embrace this chapter in my life and my role as president, I invite each of you to join me on this journey. Let us collectively commit to working together for our profession and for our patients, all while cherishing every precious moment with family and friends. By engaging in meaningful conversations with loved ones, fostering impactful interactions with our patients in clinic, dedicating ourselves to our professional responsibilities, and participating in activities that enrich our lives and those of others, you can create an impact. Working together, we have the power to shape and positively influence the future of both our organization and the entire DermPA™ profession. I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead, and I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity to serve as your President. It feels as though just yesterday I was reflecting on our progress in my July column, yet so much has happened since then. As we fully embrace the summer season, with vacations winding down and school year rapidly approaching, I find myself full of gratitude for these precious remaining weeks of summer.  Striking a balance between family commitments, patient care, and my responsibilities within the SDPA has been a rewarding challenge—and one I’m still mastering!
 
Over the past month, our organization has been deeply engaged in evaluating our strategic plan and strategizing the implementation of key initiatives. We’ve focused on curating our committees, orienting our volunteers, and developing innovative programming opportunities, alongside executing an impactful and educational leadership summit. I’m excited to share more details with you all, as I am incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication demonstrated by our exceptional staff and committed volunteers in their efforts to elevate the SDPA.
 
As you may recall from last month, one of our significant achievements has been the development and implementation of a new three-year strategic plan centered around the pillars of Knowledge, Advocacy, Leadership, and Engagement. This plan, closely aligned with our vision, mission, and core values, sets a clear course for the future of the SDPA. The leadership team has now taken the next step by adopting a tactical approach focused on specific initiatives that will drive the strategic plan forward year over year, delivering tangible results for our members. This organized strategy not only lays the groundwork for the successful future of our organization but also underscores our commitment to achieving remarkable outcomes together!
 
One of the key responsibilities I’ve embraced is curating the SDPA committees for the upcoming leadership year. This involves careful appointments of committee members, vice chairs, co-chairs, and chairs, a task I approached with the utmost thoughtfulness and intention. I meticulously assessed each committee's needs and the talents of our volunteers to ensure the most effective alignment of skills and knowledge for the success of the SDPA. In addition to the appointment of our established committees, I am excited to announce the addition of an 'Early Career' committee, chaired by Joe Cari PA-C. This new committee is dedicated to creating a supportive pathway for newer DermPAs™, offering programming that guides them as they navigate their careers from day one through to retirement. Furthermore, we have established a state affiliate liaison, Maggie McKernan DMSc, PA-C, who will provide essential support and resources to our state affiliates as they work to create, maintain, and grow their organizations. These initiatives are just a glimpse of the proactive measures we are taking behind the scenes to ensure the long-term success and prosperity of the SDPA. We are here for our members, and WE HEAR YOU!

 
In my last newsletter, I shared the enthusiasm surrounding our upcoming leadership summit, which took place in late July. This annual gathering unites our board of directors, committee chairs, and staff from across the nation to delve into non-profit governance, clarify individual roles and responsibilities, and engage intentionally with our strategic plan. This year, I adopted a three-pronged approach to leadership training, focusing on 'Creating Organizational Culture,' 'Developing Our Leadership Acumen,' and 'Planning for the Future of the SDPA.' Our primary goal for the summit was to orient all volunteers to their current roles, responsibilities, and objectives. I believe it is essential to provide our volunteers with the tools they need to succeed, empowering them to lead the SDPA in delivering meaningful benefits to our members. After three days filled with dynamic content and collaboration, I left the summit feeling a palpable sense of excitement and passion among our volunteers. I am incredibly grateful for this dedicated group, and I am confident that, together as a team, we have everything it takes to propel the SDPA to new heights.
 
As I reflect on the strides we've made within the SDPA, I am filled with appreciation for our history and tremendous optimism for the journey ahead. From implementing our new three-year strategic plan to empowering our volunteers through comprehensive leadership training, we are laying a strong foundation for the future of our organization. The addition of the 'Early Career' committee and the support provided by our state affiliate liaison demonstrates our commitment to positive changes, guiding new DermPAs™ on their professional paths and providing support at the state level.
 
Our members matter. Your voices matter, and we are dedicated to listening and responding to your needs as we move forward. Together, with our collective passion and determination, we will continue to elevate the SDPA and make a significant impact on the lives of DermPAs™ and the patients they serve. I look forward to this exciting journey ahead, and I can't wait to see all that we will accomplish together. In a time when medical practices across the nation face both rising costs and continuing strains on resources, the Society of Dermatology Physician Associates (SDPA) opposes any reductions in Medicare payments and calls on CMS and other policymakers to reverse course on these proposed cuts.

Cuts to Medicare may result in some practices reducing the number of Medicare patients they see or dropping out of the program altogether. This increases the likelihood of many patients losing their access to care or finding themselves more limited in their choices of providers and practices. SDPA and our DermPA™ members will continue to advocate for increasing access to care for all patients.

Our members are the beating hearts of the SDPA, and as our community continues to grow and flourish, so does our potential to make a profound impact in the lives of DermPAs™ and their patients. I have bold aspirations for the future of our organization and plans to deliver.  Together, we are poised to accomplish remarkable things!
 
Over the past year, the SDPA has undergone a transformation, meticulously evaluating every aspect of the organization for areas of improvement. Collaborating closely with our new CEO, Krista Bower, we have made significant strides towards long-term, sustainable success. Key accomplishments include updating our bylaws, creating core values, crafting a new mission and vision statement, and devising a strategic plan centered around Knowledge, Advocacy, Leadership, and Engagement.  (Affectionately known as “K.A.L.E.”, because who doesn’t love a good acronym?!). As the dust from this “construction project” settles, it is now time to align our objectives with the vision and mission of the organization, under the umbrella of our 3-year strategic plan, so that we can propel the SDPA forward into a bright future.
 
As we enter July, we are busy preparing for our upcoming leadership summit scheduled later this month. This annual gathering brings together the board of directors and committee chairs from across the country delve into governance of a non-profit organization, learn individual roles and responsibilities and work strategically through the plan for the years to come.  With a comprehensive agenda spanning three days, we will focus on themes such as "Creating Organizational Culture," "Developing Leadership," and "Planning for the Future." I am excited for the opportunity to roll up our sleeves and dive into this summit, which has been carefully curated by our CEO Krista, our dedicated staff, and myself, and I look forward to providing an overview of our accomplishments in our newsletter next month.
 
I am truly grateful for the path that has led me to a career as a PA, particularly in the field of dermatology, sometimes the journey feels surreal.  As I step into this role, I consider it the greatest honor of my life. The dedication and passion of our SDPA volunteers and members inspire me, as you form the heart of our organization. For myself, the SDPA feels like home and our volunteers feel like family. My hope and goal is for this feeling to resonate with all of our members. As we stand on the cusp of a new chapter and embark on this journey together, I am confident that our collective efforts will lead us to new heights. I am privileged to serve as your president and look forward to the exciting opportunities and accomplishments that lie ahead. Together, we will continue to positively impact the lives of DermPAs™. SDPA engaged the services of Western Management Group (WMG), an independent third-party firm specializing in studies of this type, to conduct the survey on its behalf. Conducted online in February and March 2024, the survey collected data from 994 individual dermatology PAs across the United States. Various aspects of dermatology PA work and life incorporated into the study include examinations of practice type and size, procedures performed, level of responsibility, personal billings, and collections for the 2023 calendar year.

The final report details several key findings, including:

• Most respondents were females between the ages of 31 and 51. Eighty-one percent of respondents were female, while the large plurality (42.3%) were between the ages of 31 and 40. Respondents reported a median of eight years of experience as a DermPA™ and 10 years of experience working as a PA overall.
• Nearly all respondents provide medical dermatology as part of their PA practice. A majority also provide either cosmetic (74%) or surgical (80%) dermatology services. Similarly, 98% of respondents reported that they perform procedures as part of their practice. Of those who perform procedures, nearly all perform medical procedures, while 64% perform cosmetic procedures, with the injection of neurotoxins such as Botox being the most common, and 97% perform surgical procedures including excisions.
• The most common type of dermatology practice reported was a Single-Specialty Group Practice (55% of respondents), followed by a Solo Physician Practice (28%), while the most common type of practice location was suburban (62%).
• The most common caseload reported was 21-30 patients per day (47%), and 101-150 patients per week (42%). Respondents reported spending a median of 32 hours per week scheduled face-to-face with patients, with an additional median of three hoursscheduled administrative time and three hours of unscheduled administrative time per week. DermPAs™ responding to the survey reported performing a median of 42 full body skin exams on patients each week.
• A majority of respondents reported having an advanced degree related to their PA practice. The most popular degree was a Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS), which was earned by 63.5% of respondents.
• The majority of respondents (94.6%)said they prescribe biologics to their patients, but only 54% reported that their practice has a biologic coordinator.
• Sixty percent of respondents reported performing telehealth services such as video or telephone dermatology appointments with patients.
• Median total annual compensation (including base pay and any form of additional pay) for DermPAs™ increased by 23% over the 2017 survey figure.
• There was a large degree of variance reported in pay influenced by several factors. Years of experience had a major impact on compensation, with those with more than 20 years of experience working as a DermPA™ earning 81% more than those with less than three years. Geography was also a driving factor, with an observed gap in median pay between states as large as 55%. In contrast, having an advanced degree did not see increased compensation as a result on average.
• Another significant factor correlating with compensation was gender. Though women far outnumbered men in the surveyed population (81% to 19%), the men reported median total compensation 37% higher than the women. The men generally reported more experience than the surveyed women, but not to an extent equivalent to the difference in pay.
• A majority (61.3%) of respondents experienced at least some burnout in their job over the last year.
• When asked about the best part of their job, the most common answers given by DermPAs™ completing the survey referred to patient care and positive patient outcomes or to working with their colleagues and collaborating on a medical team.
• The biggest challenges reported by DermPAs™ on the survey included frustrations resulting from dealing with patient insurance plans or other healthcare payers, feeling overbooked with a high volume of patients, and challenges resulting from staffing shortages, such as not having enough medical support staff.

Alexandria, VA, July 1, 2024 – North Carolina-based dermatology Physician Associate Amber Blair, MMS, PA-C, today assumed the role of president, Society of Dermatology Physician Associates Board of Directors. Blair, a DermPA™ with Dermatology, Laser and Vein Specialists of the Carolinas in Charlotte, North Carolina, will serve a one-year term leading the 10-member board.

Blair brings over two decades of healthcare experience to her current role, with a diverse background and a passion for dermatology that is impressive. As a dedicated advocate for the profession, in addition to her clinical practice she has contributed numerous articles to peer reviewed dermatology journals, served as an educator for her colleagues, developed educational programming for dermatology professionals and served as a sub-investigator for clinical trials.

In 2016, Blair became involved with the SDPA, hosting Dermcast TV. She subsequently was appointed as the publication and communications committee chair and later elected to a position on the board as director at large, where she served for three years.  Amber went on to serve as Secretary Treasurer for the organization before being elected to the position of President.

Blair graduated summa cum laude from the University of Central Florida’s Cardiopulmonary Science Program in Orlando, Florida, and subsequently worked in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Arnold Palmer Hospital. She earned her master’s in medical science in Physician Assistant Studies from Nova Southeastern University, in Orlando, Florida graduating cum laude and quickly found her home in Dermatology.

SDPA Statement on Counterfeit Botox Reports

Alexandria, VA April 25, 2024 - The Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants (SDPA) is deeply concerned about recent reports of the use of counterfeit botulinum toxin injections leading to multiple cases of patient illness across the country. The improper administration of medical injectables or the use of counterfeit botulinum toxin, commonly referred to as “Botox,” can lead to serious health consequences. Botox treatments should only be sought by patients in a medical setting from licensed and trained medical professionals including dermatology physician assistants/associates (DermPAs^TM).

Botox is a safe and effective treatment for medical and cosmetic conditions. The use of counterfeit Botox or the administration of any injectables by untrained individuals brings a serious risk of adverse health conditions including vision impairment, infection, and severe muscle weakness leading to difficulty swallowing or breathing. It is vital for patients to remain vigilant and to only seek these treatments by a trained and licensed medical professional who can properly inform them of these and other possible risks.

DermPAs^TM are highly trained medical professionals who provide excellent patient care in collaboration with a board-certified dermatologist. DermPAs^TM are committed to patient safety through proper training and compliance with national and state regulations governing patient care.

FTC Final Rule Could Ban Agreements

Outcome could significantly impact Society's membership

Alexandria, VA April 24, 2024 - The Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants (SDPA) is monitoring a final rule announced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that, once effective, may significantly impact the many SDPA members across the country whose employment agreements include a noncomplete clause. The rule bans all new and existing noncompete clauses except for those currently in effect for senior executives. Employers will be required to provide notice to their employees currently tied to a noncompete agreement that they will not be enforcing those provisions.

SDPA first notified its members about this new FTC rule after it was proposed in early 2023. According to the FTC’s statement, the commission received over 26,000 public comments during that period, with the vast majority in favor of the proposed rule.

The rule is expected to go into effect 120 days after its publication in the Federal Register, barring any delays from potential court challenges. SDPA will continue to monitor this new rule and inform our members of any major developments.

Aiming High: What Do You Want to Achieve this Year?

Dear Colleagues,

Energy is high, and the year is off to a great start at the SDPA. We are buzzing with great ideas. Our volunteer leaders are strong, driven, and passionate about improving the professional lives of all DermPAs™. Fortunately, we are a healthy organization with creativity, ingenuity, and the drive to develop programming and resources to support the success of DermPAs™.  Our leaders recently convened and used our natural PA collaborative skills to brainstorm new initiatives. This diverse group of PAs was great for exchanging thoughts and ideas. Coming together as a team strengthened our relationships and empowered us to think creatively and be visionary about where we want our profession to go. Initiatives to continue the evolution of our practice include mentorship, professional development, the use of AI, employment legalities, and reimbursement advocacy, to name a few.

What is on our horizon? Our membership committee worked together to create the practice survey that you recently received. Many hours of thoughtful consideration went into creating the survey, hoping it will provide helpful information for you. This is another concrete way SDPA is pouring resources into advocating for you.   

Speaking of investing, through substantially reinvesting SDPA funds, our diplomate committee got the green light on the new, improved Diplomate program. They are updating the program to bring a more effortless, engaging learning experience to benefit new DermPAs™ and our patients.

Our distance CME is hosting a live webinar on recent key findings from the JAAD to engage members and support evidence-based practice. The bank of previous webinars remains available for later viewing including nail disorders, JAK inhibitors, and contract negotiation.

The legislative committee is focused on PA advocacy issues to augment your ease of practice. Please correspond with us regarding practice issues that are important to you. We also proudly announce the launch of the merchandise store to promote the DermPA™ brand. Please send photos of yourself wearing your PA proud shirts. Another launch happening this month is the new JDPA Winter issue published by Wolters Kluwer. This hallmark event marks the beginning of a substantial jump in PA scholarship opportunities.

As you can see, SDPA has started off the year making large strides toward our goal to serve DermPA™. SDPA is the only organization run by DermPA™, empowering and equipping DermPA™ to reach their goals.

Currently, wound care clinics are run primarily by a variety of other specialties, including surgery, podiatry, plastics, vascular, and rheumatology. Despite this landscape, one could argue that no one is more well-versed in treating the integument than those specializing in dermatology. We see a great deal of wounds, and logically are a perfect fit to treat these patients. While we value our counterparts and understand that they are crucial to the healthcare team, involving dermatology could bridge gaps in care and aid the wound care centers from getting bogged down with conditions that we are capable of treating. Patients suffering from chronic wounds, superficial venous ulcers, mild diabetic foot ulcers, and post-op wounds are certainly within the dermatology wheelhouse. By committing to improving our education and clinical skills regarding wound care, discussing wound healing at conferences, and taking the lead among our colleagues, as a specialty we can become the front line for these patients in need.

In SDPA’s online Lower Extremity Wound Care Course featuring Andrew Rader, MD, we learn everything there is to know about wound care from a dermatology perspective, including intake, etiology, treatment of both acute and chronic wounds, shifting expectations, and approved products and techniques that can help persistent wound outcomes.

We learn that wound care can be gratifying. Some wounds heal quite easily with debridement and compression while others require follow up and patience. We will feel rewarded by saving our patients from long term antibiotic use and inpatient therapy. We will relieve hospital systems from longer stays and higher costs. We can work on a team of caretakers for a population whose wound care needs are increasing. There is tremendous growth opportunity, and as you pursue your niche in dermatology, I encourage you to consider the possibilities in wound care. Will you be the wound guru in your area?
